About Me

Kamal Kanti Banik born on January 4th, 1962 is a visionary social entrepreneur, independent researcher, and environmental advocate from Belonia, Tripura. With decades of work rooted in India’s cultural heritage and ecological sustainability, he has seamlessly blended tradition with innovation to create lasting impact.

A Harvard-trained entrepreneur and Ashoka Fellow, Banik has led transformative grassroots initiatives through NGOs like Rupayan and Dishari, focusing on biodiversity conservation, river fish sustainability, women’s empowerment, and public health. His efforts have earned global recognition and partnerships with institutions like UNICEF, UNDP, Ford Foundation, and the World Bank.

Beyond activism, Banik is a passionate researcher and journalist, contributing to environmental science, cultural studies, and policy advocacy. He has worked with IIT Delhi, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and various biodiversity boards across India.

Now, through his latest venture Squarkart—a tech-enabled hyperlocal platform—he aims to empower communities with sustainable livelihoods while promoting ecological balance. Banik’s life and work stand as a powerful example of purpose-driven leadership in action.

Projects

Driven by a passion to rediscover the lost wisdom of ancient India, Banik delves into age-old texts on mathematics, science, astrology, astronomy, and history. His mission is not only scholarly but profoundly transformative—seeking to revive the intellectual legacy of our ancestors and awaken a new cultural consciousness in future generations.

A Commerce graduate from Calcutta University and a certified entrepreneur from Harvard University, USA, Banik have successfully combined his academic foundation with grassroots activism. His early life was shaped by the values of service and justice instilled by his family. His father, Subhash Chandra Banik, was an advocate for labor rights in the jewellery industry and played a key role in refugee rehabilitation during the Bangladesh Liberation War. His mother, Upasana Banik, was a spiritually devoted homemaker who nurtured his deep moral compass.

Social Entrepreneurship & Environmental Leadership

In 1985, Banik co-founded Rupayan, followed by the launch of Dishari (1989)—a Tripura based NGO committed to socio-economic development, environmental conservation, and sustainable livelihood generation. He also co-founded Save the Water Sources, a US-based initiative focused on global water conservation and Swasti Corporation, USA for the same. He was addressed to the Governing Bodies meeting of American Engineers of Indian origin forum at Maryland University, USA on 4th December 2014. Through these platforms, Banik has spearheaded numerous innovative projects in with the support of international organizations like the UNICEF, UNDP, Grameen Bank (NGO -Bangladesh), IGDC, JICA, Ford Foundation, AFPRO-SDTT, ATREE. His work spans rural livelihood promotion, biodiversity

conservation, skill development for women, and public health awareness. In recognition of his efforts, Banik was awarded the Ashoka Fellowship in 2007 for his pioneering approach to river fish conservation, and was a finalist at the World Bank Indian Development Marketplace the same year. He has also been called in a Global Change Maker Forum on Save the Water Sources globally at Bangalore and Ahmedabad by Global Action on Poverty (GAP).

Academic Contributions & Publications

Mr. Banik has also contributed significantly to the academic world. His joint paper with IIT (Delhi) scholar, “Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water: A Future Water Quality Threat”, was published in the Indian Journal of Environmental Protection in October 2006. He has also served as a co-guide for wildlife research dissertations and contributed to biodiversity studies, notably as Principal Investigator under the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (UK), and the Tripura Biodiversity Board and also Principal Investigator for the research of Birds and Mammals of Tripura, Birds of Trisha Wildlife Sentcury etc.

He was studies for a joint Project of Tripura forest department, North East Hill University and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on Joint Forest Management, Studies with Southern Circle of Forest, Government of Tripura and WWF-India on Identification of Biodiversity Hotspot areas in Tripura and did studies on aquilaria agallocha as endangered species in North East India as a CITIES program and on White Rampad Vulture as endangered threatened project.
